History
Shree Sanatan Mandir in Leicester is one of the greatest prestigious Temples in the United Kingdom. In 1970 the present building of Shree Sanatan Mandir was bought and this is when the first Hindu Temple was established.
Since the 1950's, Hindus have been living in Leicester. After two decades in the 1950's, a huge community of Hindus grew up in Leicester. Before only Bhajan Mandals (A group of Hindus singing and playing instruments for devotional song in praise of God) were called to people’s homes on auspicious days to sing and play instruments. However, there was a requirement for a permanent Temple for Hindu worship, so in 1969 a prominent preacher called Ram Bhakta arrived in Leicester and decided to think about creating a Temple in Leicester. Due to this thought, he became founding patron member of the temple.
The Ganeshji, Hanumanji and Radha Krishna (Hindu deities) Murtis were first installed in 1974. In 1977, Lord Shiva, Amba ma (more Hindu deities) and Vedic scriptures were installed. The Ram Darbar (Hindu deities) was first installed in 1984. Later on, in 1985 another Hindu deity (Jalarambapa) was installed in the Temple.
The decades later viewed a complete temple, which was established for full worship by Hindus of Leicester. Shree Sanatan Mandir soon became the centre of worship, that is recognised throughout the country.
In May 2001, full renovation and expansion saw an immaculate, beautiful and welcoming place for devotees and visitors of the Temple. The marble shrines in which Murtis of deities are installed have been specifically designed and imported from India. The imaginative patterns, designs and symbols all communicate a story of its own.
Currently, the Temple is an exquisite and tantalizing place designed for congregational worship and wider functions performed in the Temple.
